Practicality and pleasure among forest and sea

When Ulrica and Jesper Fager visited a friend with a summer cottage in skånska Yngsjö, a dream of a simpler life was awakened. With its miles-long sandy beach and fragrant pine forest, just about an hour's drive from Lund, the place seemed perfect for the dream — an apartment in town with a cottage in the countryside.

Aiming for two houses in the holiday paradise

Finding a plot in one of Sweden's most popular seaside resorts was easier said than done, not least because the plot needed to be large enough for two houses. A rental house in a holiday paradise felt like an obvious business idea, which could help finance their own cottage.

The couple had almost given up the dream of Yngsjö when a vacant natural plot appeared in Furuboda, right in the area that attracted them the most:

– We were looking for a place with untouched nature and were incredibly lucky when we found our plot, with pine forest on one side and the vistas out towards the ridge on the other. We often say that we have the best of both worlds with both forest and sea, Ulrica says.

The Hav floor plan — a perfect match for both plot and needs

With two renovation projects in the rear-view mirror, the couple knew very well what building themselves entails. Now they instead looked forward to two turnkey houses, where Sommarnöjens floor plan became decisive in the choice of house supplier. Here practicality and pleasure could be combined in Modern Sommar 90 with the Hav floor plan and interior style Calm, as well as Tidlös Sommar 40 with the Berg floor plan and interior style Clean.

The interior style Calm creates a rustic cottage feel

In both houses, tiled floors were laid in the hallway, a practical solution when you have a sandy plot. In the larger house, extra roof overhangs, outdoor lighting and a washing machine were also added, with a warming stove in front of the glazed panels. Making room for the three-meter-long kitchen table was particularly important, a natural gathering point for the Fager family:

– Even though we are not a large family we like to invite guests and entertain. Then the Hav floor plan suited very well with its large open spaces. The interior style Calm also gave us that rustic feeling we were after with white floors and glazed paneling. We actually call it "the cottage", even though it is a house of 90 square meters, Jesper says.

Fixed interior by Sommarnöjens architects

The convenience of choosing a fixed interior while at the same time having room for individual solutions is something Jesper describes as a big plus:

– It was also one of the reasons we fell for Sommarnöjen, that we didn’t have to argue about countertops or knobs for the kitchen cabinet doors. Here it was a choice where we chose all the interior and then we agreed. There were some small additions, but not at all like it can be when building a house, which was important for us to avoid.

Large panes of glass for an ever-present nature

In January 2023, in the middle of a Scanian winter storm, Sommarnöjens trucks rolled onto the couple’s plot for assembly:

– It required great skill to get both houses in place, not least the large house that had to be lifted furthest into the plot over the pine forest. It was incredibly emotional and unreal when you suddenly saw your kitchen fly over the tall pines, Ulrica remembers.

Since then the houses have been carefully furnished in a pared-down style, for more time to enjoy and less for cleaning. Here it is instead the view that provides the biggest wow factor, where the large sofa in front of the fireplace is more than welcoming to curl up in on windy winter days.

If you are interested in Sommarnöjen, you should attend a viewing

Moving to Yngsjö full-time is the next dream on the wish list, but retirement age is still quite a way off. Until then, more storage would be needed, both inside and out. The next building project will therefore be to add a storage shed on the plot, while they keep both houses open for viewings. Going to a house viewing is something they really recommend to others considering a purchase:

– If you are interested in Sommarnöjen you should make sure to go to a viewing. Every homeowner has done some individual solution you can be inspired by. That’s how we decided on the extra roof overhang, because the house we visited had it. I think it’s very important to be able to touch and feel the interior in the house, whether you choose Sommarnöjen or not, Jesper thinks.
