The summer doctors on the west coast

It was work that led Anita and Magnus to the small community in Bohusläns archipelago. They fell in love with the place and since both are doctors it was perfect to continue serving at Tjörns health center during the summers. By combining time off with work they gained the opportunity to switch between their two favorite environments – their home in Härjedalens mountain world and the west coast's salty sea.

The more time they spent on the island, the more they wanted to be there. The people they got to know made them feel at home. When after 15 summers they found a nice plot there was no doubt that they would go for it. They immediately began searching for house suppliers to get their very own summer retreat.

Anita and Magnus fell for Sommarnöjens personal service and carefully designed houses. By studying the website from the kitchen in Funäsdalen they saw exactly what they wanted: a larger house of 35 sqm with room for a living room, kitchen, bath, bedroom and sleeping alcove. And a smaller house of 25 sqm with living room, bathroom and bedroom.

- "We chose to add another house right away", Anita says. "We have four children and thought it was unnecessary to squeeze into one house."

Sommarnöjens architect made a site visit to Magnus and Anita's new plot to give advice on the placement and orientation of the houses. A winding gravel road leads to the site surrounded by rocks and protective deciduous forest. If you climb up on the rocks you can see the sea a little way from there. The houses were placed in an L-formation to frame the glade.

It was important for Magnus and Anita that the paint used was natural. All Sommarnöjens houses can be painted in tjärvitriol, a natural product. It consists of only three ingredients; wood tar, balsam turpentine and a gray pigment. Together they form a product that gives a unique wood protection that resists moisture, while allowing the wood to breathe.

The color of their house in particular shifts a little towards green and fits well with the rock rising behind the corner. The wood continues all the way around. Exterior, as well as interior.

In consultation with the architect the bedroom door in the larger house was moved closer to the large sliding glass doors. This made it possible to look out in even more directions compared to before. More points of contact with nature make it easier for them to exhale and recharge their batteries.

- "That's how you want it. Great contact with nature", Anita concludes.

Last year Anita and Magnus spent their first entire summer in their new summer retreat. Between shifts at the health center they relaxed by tending their garden. Blueberries have been planted and a flower meadow sown. This summer they will see the place bloom for the first time.
