A haven in the fishing village

Martin is an experienced recreational angler and over the years has discovered many hidden gems along Skånes kust. He shares his love of the sea with his wife Helen, and the dream of a coastal summer house has long been a shared wish.

Originally the plan was to design their own house since Martin himself works in the construction industry, but when the drawings were finally finished it became clear that the build would be far too expensive.

Sommarnöjen, which had been on the couple's radar from the start, then became relevant again:

– When we went back to Sommarnöjens solutions we realized that we would get almost everything we wanted to create with our self-drawn house, in a package that was economically feasible for us. Sommarnöjens concept is something that really appeals to us: building good architecture at a reasonable cost, says Martin.

– There aren't that many companies that deliver both small and beautiful houses, so after some searching Sommarnöjen appeared fairly quickly with a design language that we liked very much.

The search for the perfect plot finally ended when Helen found a piece of meadowland for sale in the old fishing village Skateholm, barely an hour's drive from the family's townhouse in Lund. By chance the land was also close to one of Martin's favorite fishing spots. He says:

– The moment we saw the plot we felt we wanted to do something here.

Choosing the right model wasn't entirely easy, but in the end they chose Tidlös Sommar 60, with the floor plan Berg and the interior style Rå:

– We wanted some flexibility on the plot and to make the most of all the values, so we actually tried all the variants before we decided. The main objection we had to the Berg floor plan was that the kitchen was quite small, but we were able to solve that already at the first meeting with Sommarnöjen by rethinking the space, explains Martin.

Unique without standing out

It turned out to be possible to add more customized solutions – in addition to a window door in the small bedroom and a vanity in the bathroom, they have also adjusted the kitchen window to optimize the view. The decision to choose a slightly higher ridge height to include a loft is a choice they are particularly happy with, according to Helen:

– We were absolutely overjoyed when we saw the house for the first time, it's truly fantastic joinery. It has a character that doesn't stand out, while at the same time being very special. Our acquaintances who also have a cottage nearby often say that it's as if the house has always stood there, since it fits so well into the surroundings.

By installing a wood-burning stove for extra heat the family can now use their new house year-round to recharge their batteries and enjoy nature. With a bus line that goes all the way to Skateholm the couple's teenage daughters have been able to get there on their own to hang out with their friends, a much-appreciated retreat where the sea is only a few hundred meters away.

– Our daughters have made this place their own in their own way, with ideas for things we can do in the house that are important to them.
