The cliff house on Tjörn

Kim and Helena encountered several obstacles in their search for their summer house. They wanted a modern house with a flat roof and a roof terrace to take advantage of the sea view. But the municipality said no, arguing that it did not fit in the old fishing community on Tjörn. The house had to have a gable roof.

A gable roof and solid wood in a small house of 35 square meters can make it feel like a cramped cabin, something Kim and Helena wanted to avoid. The loft was therefore removed to create more space in the open-plan living room and kitchen. Floor area was freed up with smart drawers under the beds. The wood paneling on the walls and ceiling was replaced in favor of smooth, white surfaces. The wood as the consistent material in the house is retained, but toned down for a more modern impression.

"It feels like 75 sq m", Kim says enthusiastically.

Another obstacle on the way to the dream house occurred during delivery. During transport out to Kyrkesund on Tjörn the house was unexpectedly damaged in an accident on the narrow roads. Kim and Helena were therefore not able to move in as planned, even though the key had been enticingly in the front door.

The summer opening had to wait, while staff were sent to the plot to repair the damage that had occurred and to replace the broken parts.

"Sommarnöjen handled it well", says Kim. "It was quick and smooth to fix everything."

The house stands on discreet piles on grey archipelago rocks. Tjärvitriolen and the metal roof make the house blend into the environment in a natural way. From the road it looks like the house is floating. Many curious visitors have been attracted by the sight and wanted to see the house up close, and Kim and Helena have proudly shown it off.

Summer days in the new house have begun by sliding open the sliding glass doors and drinking morning coffee with their legs dangling over the grey rock slab. Outside tall, leafy birches stand. There they imagine the pergola that they plan to build together with Sommarnöjen. It will be an outdoor room without visibility from outside, while at the same time completely open. The perfect addition to Kim and Helena's beautiful country retreat.
