Gotland comfort with a classic guesthouse

In Hamra on south of Gotland the couple Camilla and Michael have their summer house, a place characterized by the southern tip's alvar and agricultural land. Camilla's family has had their retreat here since the 1970s, on a plot with unobstructed views over expansive fields and grazing cows.

On the plot there is an field where some of Gotland's many orchids bloom and in the garden Camilla tends her love for older rose varieties such as Alchymist and Rosa Mundi:

– It is a very rural area with farming and heath, but also close to the sea. If you hop on a bike you are down at the beach in ten minutes, she says.

A stone barn from the 1940s with deep window niches and a warming wood-burning stove functions as kitchen and living room, with several smaller sleeping cottages where guests can stay overnight. Camilla says that over the years life has been idyllic in every way except one – the absence of an indoor shower and toilet

Sommarnöjen the obvious choice

With older relatives and a bunch of grandchildren (including twins on the way) the couple decided to take the plunge and invest in an attefallshus with all amenities, where Sommarnöjen was the obvious choice from the start.

– We have always thought that Sommarnöjen has very nice and solid models and for us it felt natural to choose such a house. We didn't even look at any other options, not least because it's so difficult to get hold of craftsmen on Gotland, explains Camilla and adds:

– The most important thing was that we would have it comfortable with plenty of space.

Extra-large bathroom and customized wardrobes

With the Classic Guesthouse 30 model and interior style Calm the couple could get an extra-large bathroom since no kitchen space was needed, where they added a vanity unit. At the same time the floor plan enabled both a private bedroom for the couple with customized wardrobes and a creative work studio, particularly appreciated by Camilla who has long worked in textiles and interior design.

Adding extras to your house model to optimize solutions is something she doesn't think you should shy away from, if finances allow it:

– If you're going to invest in a solid house of high quality anyway, it can really help create harmony in the house, for example with our wardrobes in the bedroom.

"It's so comfortable in every way"

The house was installed in the autumn of 2023, a process which, according to Camilla, was “very simple”. Today the attefallaren has become a natural part of the plot, where a limestone patio ties the stone barn to the house through an extra room under the open sky. The attefallaren has also been given a staircase with wide treads for relaxed coffee breaks, just like in Camilla's childhood home.

– It's so comfortable in every way. We mostly socialize in the stone barn, but it works so well for our guests to use the bathroom and shower, not least for my father who is over 95 years old. If we want privacy in our bedroom in the mornings we simply close it off, so everyone can still come in and take care of their toilet needs since the entrance to the bathroom goes through another room.

When the couple open the double doors to the bedroom and the study they can from the bed enjoy an unbeatable view over the ängen and the old poplars in the distance. Now all that's left is to plant a honeysuckle on the gable facing the bedroom, which will be the last piece in the house project:

– Then we can lie in bed and smell the scent of the honeysuckle when it blooms, says Camilla.
